Gabriel Faure, Requiem, Franz Schubert, Mass in G Major, Stephen Czarkowski, Guest Conductor
Great composers and great music are inspired by the subject of death, but Faure’s Requiem of 1893 is unique. Faure concentrates on the true meaning of the word “Requiem”, or “rest”. His Requiem is about peaceful acceptance and release, and the music is serene, elevating, comforting. Schubert wrote the popular G Major Mass in 1815, probably to be performed at his family’s church in Lichtenthal. The six sung portions of the Mass Ordinary—Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei—are all present; each is set with great brevity, but without hastiness.
