Instrument Purchases

The Friends of Music assist the SU Department of Music with instrument purchases on a regular basis. Often, these instruments are very expensive "big ticket" items that could not be procured without the assistance of a major initiative from FOM. In addition to the wonderful Fazioli Concert Grand the FRIENDS have also purchased a Yamaha P22 upright piano, a concert string bass as well as numerous wind and percussion instruments. The FRIENDS also assisted the department in procuring new iPod Touches for each SU music major to assist in their studies. These iPods will allow the students to listen to our music library anywhere they go, access course materials, use them as tuners and metronomes, and much more.

The Shepherd University Friends of Music recently purchased a new bass for the Shepherd University Orchestra. Freshman music major Christina Schirf will be practicing and performing on the instrument, a 3/4 size double bass by Christopher, with a carved top and Busetto corners. The $2,800 bass comes with a fully lined case and a French model horsehair bow of carbon fiber construction.

Christina Schirf is the daughter of William and Kathleen Schirf of Altoona, PA. She plays not only the double bass, but also sings and plays bass guitar and French horn. Christina, a graduate of Altoona Area High School, has been the recipient of a Charles Reddenberger String scholarship and has participated in All-State Orchestra and the Altoona and Pittsburgh Symphony side-by-side events. A scholarship student at Shepherd University, she participates in the Marching Band, the Wind Symphony, Orchestra, Masterworks Chorale, and the musicals.
