The Pied Pipers of Early Music - Piffaro comes to Shepherdstown
Friends of Music mini-series goes into effect today
Shepherdstown, WV - Friends of Music is bringing Piffaro, the nation‘s finest Renaissance wind band, to the Frank Center at Shepherd University on November 11, 2011, 8:00 p.m. Piffaro, The Renaissance Band, originally called "The Philadelphia Renaissance Wind Band", is a Philadelphia-based early music ensemble. The Philadelphia Inquirer wrote “The players fused musical agility with expansive freedom. It was like hearing a top-fight jazz group handing melodies around for variation and laughingly competing for prominence.” The concert is being sponsored by Scott Beard and Alan Gibson.
Founded in 1980, Piffaro performs throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. The ensemble has recorded extensively with Deutsche Grammophon, Dorian Recordings, Newport Classic, Navona Records, and under their own label.
The mission of Friends of Music, a 501 C3 organization, is to support the Shepherd University Department of Music and promote musical excellence throughout the region. The fall concert season has seen the Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra, under the baton of guest conductor Tara Simoncic, and the Glenn Miller Orchestra play the Frank Center to a sold-out audience. The announcement of Piffaro coincides with an invitation to take advantage of the FOM mini-series program. Beginning today, FOM is offering a three concert series - $59, and the five concert series - $99.
The remaining concerts of the 2011 -2012 season are:
