The Friends of Music regularly provide travel assistance to the SU Department of Music. When the Concert Choir and jazz Ensemble were invited to Italy and Switzerland (to perform in the 2003 Montreux Jazz Festival) the FRIENDS were there. The FRIENDS provided travel scholarships to several outstanding musicians and then-president Dr. Alexander Fleming hosted a marvelous five-course meal for everyone in the beautiful town of Perugia, Italy. In 2005 the FRIENDS launched a new initiative, the CARNEGIE CONNECTION, to assist the SU WInd Ensemble in its invited appearance at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The FRIENDS provided buses, travel scholarships and instrument rental for the five-day residency in New York. in 2007, the FRIENDS once again provided financial assistance so that the SU Chamber Choir and Jazz Ensemble could perform in England on a ten-day tour. Most recently, the FRIENDS provided travel assistance for a ten-day tour of Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic. A ten-minute video of this tour is available here (video link).
The FRIENDS also provide domestic travel assistance to conferences, concerts and performances for various members of the SU Department of Music.
